Paddle boards for beginners

Trying stand up paddling for the first time? Then a stable, forgiving board matters most of all. A good beginner board sits calmly on the water, forgives small balance mistakes and gives you confidence straight away. That means you'll be paddling upright sooner and enjoying every minute from the start.

Trying stand up paddling for the first time? Then a stable, forgiving board matters most of all. A good beginner board sits calmly on the water, forgives small balance mistakes and gives you confidence straight away. That means you'll be paddling upright sooner and enjoying every minute from the start.

What to look for as a beginner

Three things matter most for beginners: width, thickness and length. A wider board (around 32 inches) is more stable, a thickness of 6 inches carries more weight, and an all-round length around 10'6" is easy to steer. All-round inflatable boards tick all these boxes, which makes them the best choice for your first paddle board.

Complete package, straight onto the water

Most beginner boards come as a complete package: board, paddle, pump, leash and backpack. So there's nothing extra to buy. Our beginner buying guide explains step by step what to look for, so you can choose with confidence.

Common beginner mistakes

Many beginners kneel for too long or stand too far back, which makes the board feel unstable. Place your feet shoulder-width apart around the middle of the board, look at the horizon instead of your feet, and use your back and core rather than just your arms. With a stable board and these tips you'll be standing upright surprisingly quickly.
