What Is an Inflatable Paddle Board? Everything You Need to Know (2026)

Stand up paddling is one of the fastest-growing watersports in Europe. And almost everyone who takes it up chooses an inflatable paddle board β€” also known as an iSUP (inflatable Stand Up Paddleboard). But what exactly is an inflatable paddle board, how is it made, and is it the right choice for you?

In this guide we explain everything: from materials and technology to the pros and cons and how to choose the right board. So you can step onto your first board well prepared.

What is an inflatable paddle board?

An inflatable paddle board is a stand up paddleboard that you can inflate and deflate. Unlike a hard board (epoxy or plastic), you roll an iSUP up to the size of a large backpack. You inflate it with a pump β€” by hand or electric β€” to a pressure of typically 15 to 20 PSI. After that the board is rigid and strong enough to stand on and paddle.

A high-quality inflatable board is almost as rigid as a hard board and delivers the same stability and performance for around 95% of users. For the vast majority of recreational paddlers, an iSUP is therefore the most practical choice.

How is an inflatable paddle board made?

The core of an iSUP is made of drop stitch material: thousands of tiny nylon threads connect the top and bottom of the board. When you inflate the board, those threads pull it taut β€” creating the flat, rigid shape you need to stand up.

Around that core are layers of PVC (polyvinyl chloride), which make the board strong, waterproof and durable. Cheaper boards have a single layer of PVC; premium boards have two or more layers, for extra stiffness and a longer lifespan.

Inflatable vs hard paddle board β€” which suits you?

Inflatable (iSUP) Hard board
Transport βœ… Foldable, fits in a backpack ❌ Large, roof rack needed
Storage βœ… In a cupboard or shed ❌ Requires storage space
Performance βœ… Great (95% comparable) βœ… Slightly better for racing/surfing
Durability βœ… Impact- and scratch-resistant ⚠️ Vulnerable to drops/knocks
Price βœ… Wide range in all price brackets ❌ More expensive on average
Best for Beginners to advanced Advanced, racing, surfing

For most recreational users, an inflatable paddle board is the more practical and better choice. Only if you actively race or surf regularly might a hard board offer advantages.

How to choose the right inflatable paddle board

When choosing an iSUP, we look at three main factors.

1. Length

  • Short (9–10 ft): nimble, ideal for children and surfing.
  • Medium (10–11 ft): all-round and by far the most popular.
  • Long (12+ ft): faster, suited to touring and racing.

2. Width

  • Wider (32–36 in): more stable, ideal for beginners and yoga.
  • Narrower (28–31 in): faster, for advanced paddlers.

3. Weight capacity & volume

Volume (in litres) determines how much weight the board can carry and how high you sit on the water. Choose a board with plenty of volume for your weight plus any luggage.

What do you need besides the paddle board?

A complete package usually includes:

  • Paddle β€” adjustable aluminium (entry-level) or carbon (lightweight, premium).
  • Pump β€” hand pump (included as standard) or an electric pump (convenient).
  • Leash β€” connects your ankle to the board for safety.
  • Bag/backpack β€” for rolled-up storage and transport.
  • Fin(s) β€” usually included; determines stability and tracking.

Many iSUPs are sold as a complete package including these accessories β€” ideal when you're just starting out.
